A new study undertaken by researchers at the German Cancer Research Center has made it apparent that older people who quit smoking are likely to gain huge benefits within a very short period.
The researchers studied 8,807 individuals within the age group 50- 74 and found out that when a person quits smoking, his risk of suffering from stroke and heart attack is reduced by more than 40 percent within the first five years after stop smoking.
As per a revelation by Professor Hermann Brenner, the study results showed that smokers are more than twice at risk of suffering from cardiovascular ailments. He adds that ex-smokers have the same low risk as same aged people who never started smoking.
The researchers said that the results derived from the study have shown that stop smoking programs that are especially prepared for youngsters, should also include older individuals.
Professor Hermann Brenner discloses that smokers are affected by cardiovascular health risk at a much younger age than people who remained non-smokers throughout their lives or those who quit smoking.
